Analysis Of Thoreau s Walden s The Woods - 1153 Words

Transcendentalism is a philosophical movement that began in the early nineteenth century in America. One of the major tenets of transcendentalism is that society and social institutions corrupt the purity of an individual. Transcendentalists believe that individuals should believe in themselves and not conform to others’ beliefs. They think that society is a major reason why individuals lack self determination and the ability to possess their own values. Henry David Thoreau, one of the major transcendentalist composed a philosophical autobiography,Walden that captures his life experience in the wood. During his time in the woods, Thoreau finds himself embracing the simplicity of nature and shows distaste in the society that forces†¦show more content†¦He believes that slavery is an immoral action that should banned. He feels disturbed by the government for their involvements in the Mexican-American war and their actions in expanding slavery. Thoreau realizes that the government uses laws and restrictions forcefully to make individuals conform. In this way, individuals are forced to comply to the government actions despite opposing them. Thoreau refuses to pay his poll taxes as a way to protest the Mexican-American war and the expansion of slavery in the South. He believes that individuals should oppose the government by not paying for taxes if they believe that the government is corrupt. Thoreau’s opposition to the go vernment collides with transcendentalism because they believe that society corrupts the intuition of an individual. Transcendentalists encourage individuals to follow their own will and oppose to things they disagree with like the corruption of the government. In addition to the criticism of the government, Thoreau feels disappointed at people conforming to society’s standard. Thoreau prefers his old clothes than new and extravagant ones. â€Å"I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit?†(Thoreau 26). He feels that his old clothes have adapt to fit in his body and it provide the basic need for

Organizational Behavior

Questions: 1. What does this questionnaire reveal about the particular factors that would keep you from working well in teams? 2. What do you think can be done to overcome your barriers to working in teams? Answers: 1. Although I have scored intermediate in the self-assessment test, working in the team can be sometimes tricky. According to my questioner, I stand in a neutral position as a team player. The factors, which are acting as barriers, are I tend to work more productively and effectively when I work alone. I do not like sharing my credits with other as in teams people as expected to work in coordination. This factor indicates that I like to control the overall process and progress in the task, and I do not easily rely upon others regarding work. In addition, I am likely to take decisions on my own that can affect the entire organization, which other team players may not like. I also have the propensity to accomplish the work more fruitfully when I work alone and my performance decreases hen I work in-group. Working with others is not at all important to me, I like to take the whole responsibility of the task or project, and I go to extends to finish it. There is a lack of team commitment , which is necessary for the coordination of a productive team (Kozlowski et al., 2015). However, I am capable of taking decisions and solving problems, my lack of working on the variety of tasks will create difficulty in teamwork. All the above factors can create hitches for me to work in groups. 2. Excellent team players frequently defined in appropriate conditions; i.e., they explained as reliable, flexible, or accommodating. Although a team works on hierarchy order, we are focusing on my development of skills to work as team members. Firstly, I need to focus on developing more on commitment towards teams performance. An effective team member stands with his team in good and bad for that reason the development of consistency and constructive and effective communication with peers and superiors is necessary. Good listening skills are another attribute that can make an individual a good team player (West, 2012). A successful team needs team members who are good at listening to understand, recognize, and think about ideas and opinions from other team members not involving in any debating and arguing at any point of discussion. Team members sometimes receive criticism from others as well as from superiors, so I need to develop proper listening skills to avoid any conflict with the team. To become an active team member, it is necessary to be an active participant in team tasks and taking initiatives to complete tasks (Galegher et al., 2014). If we take the assessment result, I lack the ability to share with others, which is necessary as most of the communication within the team occurs in an informal way and effective sharing of communication fills the gap of communication in the process and helps in finishing the assigned task. Excellent team players, in spite of differentiations team members, coordinate to work mutually work (Stashevsky Levy, 2014). Cooperating team member acts in response to requests for help and grasps the inventiveness to recommend assistance. Thus, I have to work on the above-stated factors to develop my set of skills for productively working in a team. Reference: Galegher, J., Kraut, R. E., Egido, C.
